Ruru Cottage eco farmstay is approx 1
hour north of Auckland, on the Mahurangi Peninsula, between the town of
Warkworth, Matakana wine country and Snells Beach village.
We are approx 10 minutes
drive from the many wonderful vineyards with their cafes and restaurants.
Drive to Leigh
(best fish and chips in the world) and the amazing Goat
Island Marine Reserve. The Tawharanui Regional park with it's beaches and
coastal walks is about 15-20 minutes drive.
We are also only minutes
drive away from Sandspit wharf which is the gateway to Kawau and surrounding islands.

Heading North for 2 hours will take
you to our magnificent west coast Kauri Forest. The Bay of Islands is only
a 3 hour journey and the awesome 90 mile beach is a comfortable 5 hour
drive.

Interesting Facts about
Rurus (Moreporks)
-
Rurus are
nocturnal, they roost by day in thick vegetation and will not leave
unless disturbed, they may fly off in early dusk long before actual
nightfall.

The large
flight feathers on their wings have downy edges that make their flight
almost silent.
-
They have a
very distinct call of "morepork, morepork", hence their name.
